Landscape is the dominant subject of Xia Yifu’s paintings, though animals and objects were also his favourite subjects of depiction. Xia’s paintings is about depiction of objects with minimal detail and brushstroke, without neglecting the spirits of his subjects. Despite his old age when he painted this work, from the spirit of the cat depicted, we could have a glimpse of the artist’s burning desire within.
