Wu Tung-Lung 吳東龍
Taiwanese 1976

Wu Tung-Lung is a contemporary Taiwanese artist based in Taipei. Born in 1976, he earned his B.F.A. from the National Taiwan Institute of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts) in 1998 and his M.F.A. from Tainan National University of the Arts in 2004.

As one of the few mid-career Taiwanese artists dedicated to abstract painting, Wu is recognized for his minimalist and meditative aesthetic. His works feature subdued, historically nuanced color palettes and restrained geometric forms or symbolic configurations, establishing a distinctive visual language. Through a methodical, hard-edge approach, he juxtaposes seemingly opposing elements drawn from daily life and nature, creating a subtle tension that resists singular interpretation.

Wu’s creative process is deliberate and meticulous. By repeatedly layering gesso and pigment by hand, he achieves soft chromatic harmonies and tactile, handmade textures. His paintings reveal shifting nuances under different lighting and viewing distances, inviting viewers into a contemplative experience that oscillates between perception and meaning. The abstract symbols in his work reflect both his inner state and aesthetic philosophy, encouraging reflection on the relationship between form, emotion, and time.

Wu was the recipient of the 15th Li Chun-shan Foundation Visual Arts Award in 2017. He has participated in several prestigious international artist residencies, including Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2008), Glenfiddich Artists in Residence in Scotland (2012), the ISCP in New York (2013), and Villa Waldberta in Munich (2019). His works are included in major institutional collections such as the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
