Ai Yamaguchi 山口藍

Ai Yamaguchi born in 1977, enrolled in the Department of Crafts, Concentration in Textiles Weaving, Joshibi University of Art and Design. In 1999, Ai formed the group "ninyu works" and started her artistic creation. Yamaguchi exhibited her works in numerous group and solo shows, both in Japan and internationally. The galleries where she had exhibitions include Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei, Los Angeles. Her artwork also featured in the public collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

Yamaguchi's works with delicately drawn lines combine the classical Japanese aesthetics like traditional woodcut print and Ukiyo-e with manga subculture. The main theme of Ai Yamaguchi's works depicts the lives of young female prostitutes which was typical for the Edo period (1600-1868 AD). She also incorporates Waka, Japanese poetry into her art, as well as kana and kanji words. Yamaguchi experimented with new media in her works, like seashell, ceramic plate, bucket, she also used wood panels, a blanket and cotton fabric to develop a unique canvas.
