WU Ping 吳平
Taiwanese 1920-2019

Wu Ping, sobriquet Kan-Bai, was born in Yu Yao of Zhejiang. He learnt calligraphy from his father at a young age and collected copies of ancient scripts. His calligraphical works are based on ancient scripts from Regular Script of Tang Dynasty to Seal script of Zhou and Qin Dynasties. He excelled in Seal, Clerical, Regular, Running and Cursive scripts. His paintings are unique, taking reference to traditions while reflecting the artist's personality. Upon arriving in Taiwan, he worked for the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau, later joined the "Qixiu Painting Association", the "Haiqiao Seal-Carving Society" and the "Six Six Painting Association". He became the director of the Chinese Paintings department at the National Palace Museum in 1983 and organized numerous solo exhibitions. As a recognition of his contribution, he received a Gold Cup Award on Seal Script from the Art Society of China.
