CHU Teh-chun


Chinese-French 1920


Chu Teh-chun was born in Jiangsu, China in 1920 and graduated from the Hangzhou School of Fine Arts in 1941, under the direction of Lin Fengmian. Chu Teh-chun taught at the Nanjng Central University from 1944 until 1949, when he left for Taipei to teach at the Art Department of the Taiwan National University, holding his first solo exhibition in 1954 at the Taipei Chung Shan Hall. Relocating to Paris in 1955,Chu Teh-chun began to explore Abstraction in his own art after seeing an exhibition of Nicolas de Stäel’s abstract works. Chu Teh-chun has received a number of accolades including the Silver Award at the Paris Salon du Printemps in 1957, the l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques Paris in 2001, and the European Gold Medal of Merit in Luxembourg in 2006. In 1997, he was inducted into the prestigious L'Institute de France, as a member of the Beaux-Arts and ten years later named Officier de l’Ordre national du Mérite by the President of France.
